Situated on either side of the Niagara Escarpment, you will find the various municipalities in Niagara to have a different flavour. In comparison to more mountainous regions, while the escarpment is simply a bump on the landscape, do not underestimate it. Often referred to as a micro-climate, the escarpment has definite effects on our weather, which along with the soil conditions and overall agricultural landscape, creates the conditions for our tender fruit industry.
What does the tender fruit industry produce? Grapes. And grapes = wine. It’s simple math.
With over 100 wineries scattered across this beautiful area, it really is a beautiful spot to visit. From the escarpment you’ll find ‘The Bench’ in and around the Vineland to Grimsby area. Then the escarpment slopes down to the relatively pancake flat landscape of St.Catharines and Niagara on the Lake. Spend a weekend here and then imagine having this lifestyle at your doorstep! Another big feature of life in Niagara is the recreational activities available. Is golf on your radar? There are an enormous amount of fabulous golf courses ready for your game whether you are a scratch golfer or you are carrying a slightly more double-digit handicap. There are dozens of courses that are only a click away. A few of our favourites include Penn Lakes (www.PenLakes.com), Bridgewater (www.BridgewaterCountryClub.com), Thundering Waters (www.Thunderingwaters.com) and Hunters Pointe (www.hpgolf.ca).
Thanks to the escarpment, there are beautiful trail systems, hiking and outdoor opportunities throughout. These include Short Hills Provincial Park (www.FriendsofShorthillsPark.ca), Balls Falls (www.NPCA.ca), Burgoyne Woods, the Waterfront Trail System, Brock’s Monument (www.NiagaraParks.com) and the incredible Bruce Trail (www.brucetrail.org) which is Canada’s oldest and longest market foot path running at just under 900km in total!
Property values and affordability have long been a topic of discussion in Niagara. The cliché of a couple selling their home for $800,000 in Woodbridge and then buying a nice townhome in St.Catharines or Niagara Falls for $400,000 still rings true. While we have seen a significant bump in values, there are still great values out there. More on that later.
Arts and culture are of course an important part of any city. While each municipality has their own offerings, St.Catharines has likely seen the largest amount of growth and investment in arts amenities across the region in recent years. The downtown core proudly features the “still feels like news” Performing Arts Centre (www.FirstOntarioPAC.ca) which includes multiple venues and a wide variety of world class entertainment options from the Niagara Symphony (www.NiagaraSymphony.com) to dance, live bands, comedy and just about anything you can imagine. Just up the road is the “also still feels like new” Meridian Centre (www.MeridianCentre.com) where our OHL team The Niagara Ice Dogs (www.NiagaraIceDogs.net) play which is great fun for the whole family! As well, there are numerous concerts and large venue shows to take in throughout the year. We were even treated to a monster truck show which was….ummm…interesting.
Another anchor of the local arts industry is of course the world renowned Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake (www.ShawFest.com) where you can catch a fabulous play after enjoying a top notch dining experience in any of the numerous restaurants we are lucky to have in NOTL. Find a parking spot and stroll the charming Queen Street shops and you’ll quickly realize why NOTL draws such a crowd.
Needless to say, Niagara Falls also offers a truckload of entertainment options with the tourism industry there being a well-oiled machine. We recommend parking and walking as much as possible. In particular a stroll alone the falls from the base of Clifton Hill all the way to the brink of the falls. From the 2 casinos (www.FallsviewCasinoResort.com) to The Avalon Ballroom Theatre, The Skylon Tower, Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Museum, Whirlpool Aero Car (all found at www.NiagaraParks.com), there is a reason that tourists flock to this neck of the woods all year long.
Hint…if you can go in September or October, you’ll skip a whole lot of the crowds!
